Need to file 1040x?
« on: June 30, 2010, 10:54:41 AM »
Hi all,

I've just realised I may have made a mistake on my wife's 1040. It's only a small mistake - I overstated income by about $200, for reasons I will explain below - but it may warrant filing a 1040x nonetheless. The tax payable remains at zero, since the $200 falls into foreign earned income.

I overstated income because I included in the 1040 money earned for work done in the last week of December 2009; however, the money was not credited to my wife's bank account until the first week of January 2010.

Is this a mistake, and if so does it warrant filing a 1040x? Taxable income is unaffected due to foreign earned income credit.

If I do need to file a 1040x, do I need to re-do the 1040, Schedule B and 2555-EZ? Is any negligence penalty likely to be imposed? It was a rather silly mistake after all...

Just when I thought I was done with taxes...

Thanks for your help.
