Sending Supporting Documents From UK to US
« on: July 07, 2010, 11:43:36 PM »
Just wondering how everyone went about this. What company you used, rough cost, time frame and results. I've been looking at UPS and Fed Ex, but have a hard time estimating the price because I never know what to put for the package weight. I have no idea even an estimate of what a bunch of documents will weigh.  ???

I always used Fedex.  We would use the envelope they provided and stuff it full.  I dont know how much you have, document wise.  I know when I last had hubby send me documents from the UK, it was 37.00 pounds for overnight service..which equaled to about 65.00 at the time.  For the reliability, and speed, you cant beat it.  I know the UK postal service is much higher, as is ours.  They were going to charge him over 45.00 pounds for the same thing, and it would have been here in 3-4 days..not overnight.

And..since my husband is not good at these things. I called FEDEX UK and scheduled the pick up myself, and paid with my debit card.  They brought him the envelope, and shipping label, all he had to do was fill in the address portion.

You can go to your local post office & weigh the stuff on their scales, but whatever you do DO NOT USE ROYAL MAIL! FedEx & UPS have their own customs staff so everything goes through smoothly, the package is 100% insured, guarenteed delivery and you can track it all the way to delivery.

Thank you both! I had read that about Royal Mail and remember from experience that packages between here and there have often gone missing for weeks. I think my husband found a courrier that is afiliated with FedEx so thinking that was the route he was planning to take. I don't know what the name of it was but it sounded ok, and I think the guaranteed the packages in one-two days.

Definitely Fedex for me.

Used the Royal Mail last time - £80 for an envelope to LA. The tracking didn't work and they dropped it outside the front door of the expediter's office without a signature.

Looked at UPS this time but they only seemed to offer two-day shipping for about £60.

The Fedex website seemed confused about me sending something with no commercial value so I called customer services. It took 5 minutes to have pickup scheduled same day. I was going to use my own envelope, but they advised me it was about £15 cheaper if I used their envelope!

I called later to say I was running an hour late getting my stuff togetherand they delayed the pickup without a murmur. When the guy arrived, he was very friendly and helpful. He carefully packed the envelope and filled in the airway bill sections I didn't understand.

All this for about £35 to deliver 0.5 kg to LA by 10.30am next day.
