Community College equivalent in the UK?
« on: July 27, 2010, 09:05:06 PM »
Hello.
My son in the US will be graduating from High School next spring. His plans after H.S. were to go to a Community College or equivalent, that specializes in training for the Trades. He wants to become a Machinist. Though I've been searching the web, I'm at a loss as to how to provide him this same education in the UK should he choose to join us.
Anyone know?
Thanks

Hi,
If he is looking for more a vocational certification versus a degree he would want to look at colleges. They will have a variety of courses--- in the UK most students go to college at 16 after high school....but there are many older/adult students too so I don't think your son would feel out of place.
Do you know where in the UK you will be moving to?

I'd contact somewhere like the Leeds College of Building. It is one of the largest provider of trades based courses in the UK and possibly could advise on what's in your area.

Just search for your local FE college. :)
August 2008 - Tier 4 - Student Visa
February 2010 - Tier 1 - PSW
January 2012 - FLR(M)
June 2014 - ILR (finally!)
