Wi-fi connection

I'm currently in the US, after using many different Wi-fi connections in the UK. Now, my US connection does not work and I can't figure it out.

Could this be a result of traveling around England with my US laptop? If so, how can I solve this very annoying problem?

I can't imagine that this would be the case. I travel with my netbook to the US, and am able to catch wi-fi signals there - and when I get home, I'm also able to catch the wi-fi signals here in the UK (coffee shops, etc). Mine is a US Acerr netbook.

Maybe others have had experiences like yours, but I've never had a problem.

I don't think it has to do with having been in the UK on wifi, but my computer does that when I've been at several hotels with wifi sometimes (especially this one hotel we stay at when visiting my brother! So annoying!) You may need to go into your Network settings (Networks and Sharing Center on Win Vista) and clear out any of the other networks listed when you click on "Manage Wireless Networks". You should see the names of different networks you used while on your trip. You may also have to reset your wireless router (unplug, count to 10, then plug in again and wait for it to load, then try connecting again.) If worse comes to worse, you might have to redo your wireless network. I had to do this last week when we had a lightning storm and it wouldn't connect anymore (though it saw it on the list). I had to call the router people and they helped me undo the settings and then redo it and change wireless channels and stuff....

And I know this sounds basic, but have you tried shutting down your computer and rebooting completely?

It might be that your wireless connection on your laptop is set to have a static IP address instead of obtaining an IP address automatically when you connect - which might be preventing your laptop from connecting to your wireless at home. This happened to me when I moved over to the US - I couldn't connect to the US university wireless network because I had previously set up a connection to my UK university's network and those settings were still saved on my laptop.

You can check this if you go into your Network Connections (via the Control Panel), right-click on your wireless connection icon and select Properties. Click on 'Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)' and check that the options are set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS Server address automatically' instead of having numbers in the boxes. Then check the options again for 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' and try the connection again.

Or, as Gottagettolondon suggested, it could be that your home wireless connection settings may have been adjusted or reset on your laptop and that the connection is no longer recognising your computer - it's a good idea to check your settings and maybe re-enter your security key code (if you have one)/reset your router.

I've already done all the things suggested here, which was why I thought the problem might be something specific about the UK.
