shipping companies UK to US
« on: May 15, 2010, 11:19:02 AM »
Hello. I've seen a few tips on the board but am interested in seeing if there are any new ones. I'm moving from London to the Miami area in a month. I have no place to live, just my parents' house, and will just need to take essentials of which there are a lot as I do accumulate books, papers, computer equipment and keepsakes. I'm hoping to fit my clothes into two suitcases for the plane ride and get everything else into about 3 medium sized boxes. No hurry on the stuff, just get it in one piece please! Any advice for a budget-minded expat? And would I save money shipping with Royal Mail, which sounds like a bad idea since I have no transport to the post office?

I'm using EuroUSA Shipping Ltd.
www.the-eurogroup.com

They used to be you pack, we ship and conglomerated with another company.

In the UK, they even supply the boxes which is nice.  I'm using the door to door service and so far I have been very happy with the communication and the price wasn't bad either.

Thanks! I did call Upakweship but though the rate wasn't bad I'm going with Excess Baggage which quoted me 240 for up to a 100 kilos. Let's see how that goes.

I'd be interested in hearing how much people paid for their move back to the states? Obviously its going to vary a lot depending on where you moved to (West coast presumably is going to cost a lot more than a East coast move etc).

I'm still very interested in moving back to the states, but have had wildly differing ballpark quotes from moving firms, but feel its still too far off and just idle speculation at this point to actually have someone come to my flat to do a full comprehensive quote, heck we haven't even decided on what state we'd like to move to.

If anyone who has done the move back could say where they moved from and to, roughly how much they took (i.e 5 boxes of books/dvd, or 5 boxes plus a bed and television etc), I'd really appreciate it so I can at least start to get a general idea of whether I'm looking at £1500, or more like £5000.

I'll confirm what I have above: I shipped about 6 boxes pus a suitcase totalling approximately 120 kilos for 270 quid to Florida with Excess Baggage. An extra suitcase weighing 30 kilos would have cost an extra 80. I have no idea how to ship furniture. Go for it, don't stay in the UK because it's expensive to ship your things! It's actually cheaper to ship to the U.S. than to some other places- we also shipped some things to Russia where my husband currently is and it cost twice as much.
