online forms not accepting previous US address/new UK address
« on: August 12, 2010, 01:28:10 PM »
Hi guys,

Maybe someone can relate to this... I tried doing three things online today. The first was to consolidate my US student loans. I was stopped short when I got to the address part on the online application. Only continental US, Hawaii, and Alaska are recognized.

So I thought, Ok, I will look into that later. For now, I will try to redeem my US credit card points online. I went to that website and the same thing happened. I cannot redeem them, apparently, because of my UK address. (even though my statement is sent here each month)

I have this to-do list, so I went to #3 in hopes that I could achieve something today. I applied for a UK credit card online. (one for "bad or no credit" - apparently my great US credit means nothing now) and when I got to the area where I need to fill in my previous address, which is my old US address, it was "not recognized" and I was not able to apply.

Please someone tell me they have experienced this and that every little thing when immigrating doesn't become impossible!

 :)

US forms are notorious for not realising that the rest of the world exists, or that an American would leave the US :P Your best bet is to phone them, or, if you can, use a US address (parents for example?) and then change it to your UK address later (I did this for student loans). As for the UK card, your US credit history is inaccessible and irrelevant to them, so you can't put it in. Chances are you will be rejected for not having a credit history here. Best thing to try is going to your bank for a card or looking up threads on here of people getting UK cards after moving, as without 3 years here your chance of getting rejected and having a mark on your record is 99.9%.

Wow, thanks for the advice. Was just reading about people getting store cards, and just had the same "previous address not recognized" problem at a department store website. It's probably best, from what you just said, that I didn't apply though. Thanks for the tip about the student loan too.
