I can't believe how rude, disgusting and disrespectful people can be.  Humans never cease to amaze me with their unkindness.  Unfortunately, sometimes these jerks overshadow those who are good and have kind hearts.  Shame, really.

It's possible that it's a person's insecurity/lack of self-esteem creating this unkindness. I'll never quite understand it, but apparently some people feel better about themselves by making fun of others.  :-\\\\

Do you mean like the first time my pre-school niece saw a little person and excitedly shouted "Look Mom! An Oompaloompa!"  Yeah, they had a little talk then too. :)

I am in the library and that one just made me burst out loud.

People suck.  I'm sorry your guests had to experience that as well.  The world is so mean!!!

I'm pretty oblivious to comments about my weight since I've been fat my whole life.  I'm more likely to get strange looks about my colourful clothing than my weight and that makes me giggle that people are so insecure they have to make fun of me.  Poor, pathetic people is what I say!!!  Only losers feel better about themseleves being miserable to others.  ::)  I've got better things to do than listen to them!!!!

I will never understand what makes people think that behaviour like that is okay.   >:(

But then people that do things like that are just showing their a*se to the world and that they have no manners.  Full stop.

These two things have a ring of truth to it, IME.

The thing is, it's more of an observation with a child...they don't understand the negative connotations associated with things like different skin colors, body shapes, age.

I will always remember when I was a kid that my aunt, who is overweight, said "How you doing, Slim Jim?" and I responded, "Just fine, Fat Matt!" I thought I was being clever in rhyming back to her and thought nothing of it, but her face crumpled and she nearly cried. My mom chewed me out for it and I felt like such an awful person. I never meant to hurt her feelings at all.

Like you said, kids don't really think of things like that as being hurtful, but I don't understand how adults could be so immature as to continue hurting people's feelings unnecessarily just for the sake of doing it. It's a real shame.  >:(

And why was it OK for her to call you Slim Jim?

Maybe she had beef jerky on her mind?  ;)
