Help! *Trustworthy* London estate agent?
« on: July 02, 2010, 08:50:19 PM »
Can anyone recommend a *trustworthy* London estate agent? I'll probably be looking around Camberwell and Archway, but I might be slightly flexible in exchange for dealing with an agent I could trust!

I had a scarring experience with Ludlow Thompson a couple of years ago (their countless lies landed me, my sick elderly dog, and all my possessions out on the street), so I'm loathe ever to use an agent again unless someone knows one they're sure is honest. Hey... I can dream.

Many thanks in advance!

A former friend of mine is the manager at http://www.faronsutaria.co.uk/ - (us not being friends has nothing to do with him being excellent at his job!), I believe at the South Kensington office.  His name is Nicholas Baker.
My impression is they only deal with high end and more West London properties, but at least you could check it out and ask him directly who he recommends you try for what you want.

ETA - after googling, his name is not appearing, but still worth a try!

I've used Ellis & Co in Golders Green and they are fab.  Not sure about the other branches, but I trust them.

Will ask DH, as he's worked in Kennington with properties in Camberwell so he knows the agents in the area. (he's an estate agent himself ;))

My wife and I used Hampton's International for our last move. They're one of the bigger agents and may have coverage in your area. I haven't heard any horror stories about them and our move was blissfully uneventful.. I'd likely suggest avoiding Foxton's.

Although likely impractical, given that it seems rare here, perhaps try focusing on owner-direct lettings, if you're especially worried about things getting mixed up. You can occasionally find such postings on Gumtree and, I think, Findaproperty and/or Zoopla.

I wanted to pass along this super-helpful estate agency review website!

Even ones people have recommended to me (not just here) get bad reviews -- it really seems like they're all crooks. :(

In the end I decided I didn't want to live alone after all and found a share. Thanks again to all.

I think people are more likely to write reviews if they had a bad experience than if they had a good one. I'd take those reviews with a grain of salt. My agency doesn't have the greatest reviews, but they've been really good for me - not perfect, but nothing to really merit complaining about.
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' Kurt Vonnegut

I do realize that -- but people shouldn't be having experiences like these at all with a business they're giving so much money to and trusting with something as fundamental to quality of life as housing. So I'm glad to hear about the bad experiences. Of course there's always the chance of bogus posts, but if a company gets 100 different bad reviews by people who've endured various kinds of shoddy treatment, I'll stay away. After what happened to me at the hands of Ludlow Thompson -- I was basically left homeless overnight, with my sick elderly dog, no car, and no one to help me, entirely because of their myriad and repeated egregious lies -- that I'll never trust another estate agency as far as I can throw it. Be warned.
