Hello everyone,

I was wondering if there are any US citizens married to UK citizens attending the University of Portsmouth or even a UK University in general?

I'm curious to know if the circumstances are any different from being an international student if you are here on a settlement visa.

I'm also curious to know if there are any Americans going to University of Portsmouth and your experiences. I'm hoping to attend there next fall for their International Relations and Politics program.

Thanks. :)

*raises hand* that would be me ;D.

Tuition fee wise, there's no change even if you're on a settlement visa. I'm on a student visa though and there are more restrictions as far as working and all these years will not count towards settlement.

Are you going to be coming on a spousal visa then?

I'm actually already here as a student attending a different university in London. I'm getting married next month, and will then transfer to a different university next fall.

What school are you attending? :)

Ahh, yes I've just also read your other thread in the immigration section of the board.

I currently go to Bradford uni, was going to transfer to Leeds this year but Leeds charges much more so I backed out  :(.

I'm on the psychology course, what about you?

I've just recently read that like 28% of people with the psych degree actually find a job in that field so it depressed me heavily. Ughhh stupid recession.

Don't worry, it's a bit of a bloated statistic, at least in the US.  I worked at a university textbook store for years at a large state university, and the three most popular majors are psychology, business administration, and economics which I believe are probably the most popular majors nationwide.  So 28% out of a massive number of people is still pretty good odds.

Plus, a lot of the people who major in those subjects don't want to actually become psychologists or economists, but they're versatile degrees that will get them through undergrad without a lot of fuss and into entry level jobs at corporations pretty easily.

I finished my MA at the University of York in September (still awaiting the results so fingers crossed) and I am married to a British person.  My tuition fees did go down because I was a permanent resident who had been living here for three years and I got my citizenship just before I started my course.

What disappointed me the most is when I originally came over to do my MA on a student visa (my getting to know you post has details why I left before completing my MA the first time), I received the international students association emails on their activities.  This time, I didn't because I was a home student which I felt was too bad because I had lots of fun on some of their day trips last time.

Also, many of the other students I met were single and were able to do more things involved with the University like got to some of the society meetings and such, but I had volunteering for experience with Uni work and wanted to spend time with dh so I felt like I was juggling a lot.  But this could just be my experience and I was on an MA course which may be different than getting a BA.  Good luck with your studies!!  :)

GibbyGab,

I'm currently getting a degree in Fine Arts, but I'm switching to International Relations and Politics. I don't feel as though art is my calling any more.  :-\\\\

I was back and forth about getting a degree in psychology, but I've heard some of those same things.. I think it all depends on what you want to use it for.. (I wanted to be one of those persons that did studies and research on the human mind.)

If it's what you really want to do, I'm sure you will have no problem getting into the field. :)

Thanks for your input! My current school in London is actually American, though it has students from everywhere (except for Britain). The school is completely different from any other University, but they would do the trips, too. I never went though as I tend to be more of "solo" explorer with these things.

I plan to do what you did and do internships or anyway to get experience, and spend time with the hubby. :)

NoseOverTail, you're right. I never thought of it like that. I just compared it to something like engineering and medicine where the percentage was somewhere in the 80's region.

Onemorecupofjoe, did you attend richmond american international by any chance? That's the only American school I know in the London area. I'm just being curious here  :P. International Relations sounds awesome! I regretted not getting into politics when I had the chance. Now I'm more geared towards social work but I change my mind like every month. Wish I could figure out what I want to do already!

Peresphone, I went to a lot of student events in my first year and not many in the second year but I didn't feel like I was missing out because here anyways, people just tend to get really drunk and go from one pub to another which isn't really my thing.

@GibbyGab - I'm sorry you had that experience with your University.  At U. of York, some of my friends did the outdoor society, which went on rambles that usually included a pub lunch but I don't think that was often about the drinking.  And we have a really awesome student cinema (which I still go to, and will be attending their screening of the Muppets Christmas Carol in a few weeks).  But our international students would have Halloween parties, they went to see a play at the Globe in London, and they would have day trips or weekend trips to different cities around the UK but seemed to have something social, not necessarily about drinking, on every week.  It's too bad your experience turned out the way it did.

@ onemorecupofjoe - Your school sounds very interesting.  I'm not a social person by nature, but it did help me to go out with people from my course.  Since there were only four of us on the course and about 8 Early Modernists including the PhDs, we often were sharing books during the weeks and other materials the library only had one copy of.  It was so useful that we had a rapport so we could manage the resources of the library ourselves.  Plus, I made a really fab friend out of the deal.  :)

I'm actually going to American International University at the moment (this will be my last term). It's so expensive and they offer so little.. :(
It is hard to figure out what you want to do! Especially when there are so many things out there that seem so interesting... I tried doing some deep, self-reflection.. :P

persephone

Unfortunately, the school isn't really that interesting.. I'm surprised they even do the trips, though I think they charge a bundle.. A lot of the students are pretty obnoxious and don't take things seriously, so that's why I chose not to go with them. I don't like being in a foreign country and catering to stereotypes. :\
Your school sounds so much more interesting. :)

I'm so sorry to hear that your school and schoolmates don't really appeal to you one!  That's really disappointing!   :-[

Thanks, I think it's just that this school accepts pretty much everyone- even those that shouldn't be students. A lot of the students have rich parents so they think they can do whatever they want.. :\
