Luggage Allowance with American Airlines

I'm kind of disappointed because we can only bring one suitcase weighing 50 lbs on our American Airline flight to the US. When I moved over here, I flew with United and I was allowed 2 suitcases weighing that much. We will have to pay an extra $50 for any additional suitcase. I know it will cost less to do it this way than ship anything but I am just surprised it has changed...

I think you'll find that most, if not all airlines have changed their policy to only allowing 1 free checked bag on overseas flights.  I also think that most if not all US carriers charge to check any baggage at all on domestic flights.  Fine if you're going someplace for a weekend and can manage with a carry on, I guess.

Aye they all changed their policies earlier this year.(I think) I went back to mass at christmas time and was able to take 2 suitcases with me (one empty,but full coming back )
But in June when i went I was only allowed 1 checked bag full stop.(put second bag inside first for trip to the US ) and paid the extra coming back for the second bag. .Seems its another way for the airlines to make more £££/$$$ ..

Ya, I was thinking they  must've recently changed because when I moved over about 10 months ago I was able to bring 2. I will see how much I end up bringing over with me and I may put one suitcase inside the other and bring an extra back with me.

I remember the days when you could check two bags up to 72lbs each plus two carry on bags. All at no extra charge. Ah, those were the days.

Re, Charges for baggage on US domestic carriers. It is my understanding that neither Southwest or Jet Blue charge for checked bags.
Remember corporations run the government in the US and you will also see banks and airlines making big profits this year. Sorry about the little people

Yeah southwest has awesome commercials for the 2 bags they allow...

Side note: What we are doing when we go over since obviously we will bring more back here is fly with the 1 suitcase each then hit up goodwill and buy a big ol' suitcase for $10 and pay for it the one way.

I needed an extra suitcase when I moved here and it cost me $7 from goodwill.  Hey saves on the cost one way but this way I can bring 2 more bags back full of stuff (if needed)

Also if you fly first class (which we cant afford) you get 2 bags!

Man I wish I could do the LHR-SFO trip in first class...

I heard that there was a new law in the US saying airlines have to list a "real price" that includes the cost of a checked bag and inflight meal, but now I can't remember where I read it or when it goes into effect.

I hear ya! It'd be cheaper to pay the excess baggage fees than pay the difference for first class!

Some people put one bag into the bigger bag.

Just a note: Aer Lingus allows 2 bags weighing up to 50 lbs US-UK (or it did in mid-July, even though the website indicated there'd be a charge.)

We were packing my husband's bag for his move over and debated for a while and decided to pay the $50 for an overweight bag. Then it just seemed a big hassle and we looked it up and found a quote of $50 for an extra bag, so just decided to pack two bag. We arrived at the airport and lo and behold - no charge for the extra bag. If only all other aspects of this move would come with pleasant surprises like that.

For those using this thread to come to the UK on thier visa or as a visitor. DO NOT FLY AIR LINGUS! As you'll most likely change in Dublin and you will not pass through UK immigration and not have your visa validated and it may look like you're trying to enter the UK illegally. You're going to cause yourself MAJOR problems if you do this.

However, if you're not flying for a visa stamp trip, Aer Lingus is super laid back about baggage overages.  My bags were way overweight and both times the woman said "oh well I wont charge you."

Done this route a few times, Upperclass Virgin Atlantic- Lovely way to do it!   
The bar on board is a good way to waste time on that lomg flight and the Virgin Lounge in SFO is quite a good one.
Of course if I were paying for it... that'd be a whole different matter... 
 

virgin's premium economy class allows 2 checked bags, but does cost more than regular economy.
