Curry ingredients in the US
« on: October 10, 2010, 09:46:54 PM »
We are planning our trip to the States for Thanksgiving and staying with some good friends in South NJ for a week of the trip, so I've offered to cook dinner one night and have promised my Thai fish curry. So I want to know if a few ingredients are readily available over there or if I need to take them. I realise I could probably get everything from a trip over to Philly but not sure I'll get the chance.
So, heres what I need to know.......
lemongrass
red curry paste
fish sauce
can of coconut milk
fresh ginger
naan breads (going to try making my own before though

thanks

It really depends on the town you'll be staying in. You shouldn't have a problem getting those in Philly, as you said. I'd send an email to the people who you'll be staying with and ask them.

I don't know New Jersey well, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't find most of that - even if you had to hit an Asian grocery store. Certainly you should be able to get ginger and coconut milk at a regular grocers but the rest is more likely to be found in a specialty store. Even here in the Baltimore/DC area which has a large ethnic population, we still tend to pick those things up at specialty stores as they're fresher and better!

Walmart even carries a lot of it... the lemon grass might be harder if you are in the sticks but other wise not.

Most grocery stores will have all but the lemongrass and naan bread, in their asian section.  I think the major brand is Taste of Thai.

I know I've seen pre-packaged naan bread at Target (the ones that carry groceries, anyhow), and Whole Foods should certainly have both naan and lemongrass.

For what it's worth, this naan recipe always turns out beautifully for me:

Like geeta said, you'd have no problem getting all that stuff in Philly.  My old work Essene Market and Cafe should sell most if not all of it.

Also, as your wife probably knows, there are lots of Indian grocers in West Philly--near University of PA area.

I agree that you'll have no trouble at all. I could always source those ingredients from the little Indian grocery store near my house in RI. And Philly's a lot bigger than Providence!  :)

Tykeman - Where in south jersey? My parents live at Exit 44 and now she visits .
They are a SUPER nice couple that owns it and I am SURE if you called or emailed them or posted on the FB page what you need and if you can find it there, they would tell you.

Let me know!

Thanks all. I will contact out friend and ask her to look out for a few things in the supermarket. There is Acme near by that seem to stock a wide range of things.
Thanks for the suggestion for Philly - I  did expect I'd be able to get the things over there, but it depends whether we will get over there

Ask around for an Asian supermarket. That's where I go for all of my curry fixins. My best friend's hubby is Welsh and he is constantly hitting up our local Asian market and my boyfriend (also Welsh) was pretty floored at the selection.

We have them all over the place here in Oklahoma City so I'm willing to bet Philly has a few! I was born in Philly and that's where 90% of my family is located. I can ask around to see where the Asian neighborhoods are at if you'd like!

West Philly is where the Indian markets are.  I lived most my whole life in Philly.  But I'm willing to be there will something in NJ as well if you don't get a chance to get to Philly.

Ok...again, getting over to West Philly is probably not an option given the timescale. However, speeking to DW last night and now she tells me there's an Asian supermarket not far from her dad's (which is about 10 miles from the friends we are staying with), she said it's a little out of the way but it seems more likely. and she also suggested that we take over a small jar of the Thai curry paste anyway.

Thanks for all your help.
