Milton Keynes area or surrounding

Well we received our first offer on our home tonight.  We have to counter but like my tag says as soon as the house sells we are off to the UK.  DH is already there working.  At the moment he is going between London and Milton Keynes.  We are thinking that the Milton Keynes area will be a good area for us to settle in.  Just wanted to know if anyone could offer advice or info about what area would be good to look in, what schools are like, what are house prices like (I already know houses are much more expensive than in the US )  From the small amount of the area he has seen while in the UK he thinks it is a nice area but he grew up in the Oxford area and having been in the states for 10 years really isn't familiar with the MK area.

It is getting scary now.  For so long we have talked about moving to the UK and now we are doing it.  FOr as scared and apprehensive I get sometimes I just have to give ourselves a small pat on the back for stepping outside our comfort zone and taking this adventure because right now I don't feel I am stepping out of my comfort zone but taking a huge leap!

Wow, great progress Kathy. MK isn't terribly far from me, a short train journey, around 30 minutes I think. I know my neighbor drives there for good shopping. Though I don't know the area, I do know that it is a more modern area, in that the streets are laid out in a grid as we're used to in the US.

Let me know when you get there, I'd be happy to ditch the family and hop a train for some shopping/exploring if you're up for it. Best of luck to you!

I'm close to MK as well.  About 15-20 min by car.  Shopping in MK is good, and yes, it is laid out in a grid like the US but you still have to negotiate round-a-bouts.     One of my husband's co-workers lives in MK and he loves it.  But then, he moved there from Luton.

Good luck with the house sale!  I know how you feel -- moving to the UK was a HUGE leap outside of my comfort zone.  I thought all the loose ends would never get tied up and we'd get settled.  Now, almost 6 months later I feel that we are pretty much settled.  When the dog comes home (only 8 more days!) then we will be finally settled here.

I don't know much about Milton Keynes.  When we were here last spring I traveled up to Northampton to meet DH and some colleagues for dinner.  Several of them lived in Milton Keynes and they said it was a nice area, nicer than Northampton anyway, in their opinion.

Hang in there, and remember to take deep breaths!  It will all get sorted out in the end.
