TV adverts I don't understand
« on: August 27, 2010, 08:54:50 PM »
I've seen some tv adverts that don't make sense to me.  I thought maybe it was because I'm a foreigner but my UK husband couldn't explain them either.  So, can anyone clue me in because I'm feeling like a "reight numpty".   ;)
The Spec Savers commercial - the man with crop circles in his field.  And the Mars Planets commercial - the 3 people looking for a new roommate who immediately tell the postman "NO".
Thanks!   :)

No idea, D, what these commercials are (I don't watch much TV) - but hopefully someone will!  :)

Yeah I think the "postman" is some kind of cop...I can understand why a lot of people wouldn't want to live with a cop.

I have no clue about the SpecSaver commercial except that I guess the aliens keep coming back because they are trying to tell him that he needs new glasses (since he can't read their message).

I think a lot of adverts aren't supposed to make sense...they're just supposed to be memorable to make an impression (and hopefully in turn, make you buy the products).  It's like that advert for the naked lady walking through a wheatfield...advertizing mouthwash.  Doesn't really make a lot of sense but it gets your attention.

Yeah, it's a traffic warden... I guess it's just that traffic wardens are not liked very much and so they don't want to share their flat with one (it's an immediate 'no' as soon as they see what he does for a living) :P!

Yeah, I don't really get it either, but that's the explanation that makes most sense to me.

For the most part, I don't really "get" the adverts here.

There's the Megane ones on where there were a whole bunch of people auditioning for something, but there was a person in the background telling the people to do something stupid or outrageous. How does that have anything to do with a car?

Then there's the people yelling at eachother in front of a green screen and then a picture of a condor comes on the screen and which leads to more yelling. Soooo weird!!!!!

And then the adverts for those Randoms sweets.  ??? Can't say anything else about them.

I also knew the adverts from the OP, but, never understood those either.

::) Thank God for DVR, because we just fast forward thru the adverts most of the time!

Actually, that one makes a lot of sense from an advertising point of view. The mouthwash being advertised is for healthy gums, which they say is a leading cause of tooth loss. So they show a pretty naked girl, someone most guys would be saying "oooooooooooooooooh" over...and then she smiles to show a missing tooth. The message is that don't be like her, nobody will want you if you lose your teeth. Use our mouthwash to prevent that reaction.

The people yelling at each other in front of a green screen are doing an improvisation. They're given a theme and what's supposed to be on the screen and then they go for it.

Randoms sweets - the shapes in the package are random. Apparently, if you eat them, you spout random nonsense. Just reinforcing the randomness of the shapes of the sweets.

Yeah I get the whole "losing your teeth isn't attractive" point of the advert...but they could have just as easily shown a fully clothed attractive woman with a missing tooth.  The naked part of the advert (especially the part about walking through a field...because yeah, attractive people are always walking around naked outside...showing her naked in a shower might have made a little bit more sense) has nothing to do with "plot"...it's just to get your attention.

Lots of adverts are supposed to be memorable and make you remember the name of the product, rather than actually be about the product.

This isn't unique to the UK, though.
