Baby portraits? Boots? Anywhere else?
« on: August 30, 2010, 10:14:24 AM »
While we were stocking up on baby gear for our recent arrival, we saw that Boots occassionally sets up a photo studio. It reminded me of all of those Sears/JC Penny portraits we did as kids back in the states. Is there any other place that does this that is affordable?

It seems a bit difficult to get a good portrait of a seven-week-old!

Any other advice is appreciated!

I don't know anywhere that does that (I've never looked)...but I just wanted to say that if you have a halfway decent camera, you can use free software to edit the photos and order them online.  We've done all the pics of our son on our own.  IMO, it's easier because you can take the pics at any point in time that your baby is happy.  If you have an appointment for photos to be taken, there's no guarantee that they won't be tired, hungry or cranky and uncooperative.

We took these photos http://9monthsandbeyond2010.blogspot.com/2010/08/26-day-photos.html on the living room floor, using our white duvet draped over the couch as the backdrop.  My 6-year-old daughter took the ones of me and him together.

Did you not get the Bounty pack when you had little one? Unless it's changed since I had Jean there were vouchers in there for four free photo shoots from Pixifoto (birth-6 mos, 6-12 mos, 12-18 mos, and 18 mos to 2) where you got a free 10x12 and they charged you highway robbery if you wanted to buy more  ::)

Some Snappy Snaps do portraits and Pixifoto does do a travelling service that comes to various shops (Boots etc.).

Here in Coventry they have a baby contest in the local paper and the packages they sell are really reasonable, I'm taking Jean tomorrow (It goes up to age 3).

National Chains:  http://www.htempest.co.uk/, http://www.pixifoto.co.uk/

You may also want to check for a local, independent photographer.

Try checking with your HV, and see if you get any photographers that come to baby clinic or what have you.  Every 3-4 months our surgery gets a photographer from Tempest in during our Well Baby Clinic.  They usually advertise by leaving leaflets and fliers around the surgery.  The photos are sold in a bundle (you only pick one photo), but get quite a few photos starting from about £30.

Like you mentioned Boots do it, you may get a children's photographer at your local Mothercare.

What about asking at department stores, like Debenhams, House of Fraser, John Lewis etc.?

I believe it's usually Pixifoto atMothercare, some mothercare stores actually have the studio inside.

Check the Cherubs organization, alot of photographers sign up to do 'Cherubs', and are all over the country. Some do studio, some do home visits.

This year I started doing newborns and maternity, but I'm down south in Bournemouth. Also, I only do 'home studio' at the client's home with natural light, so if you are thinign Sears/JC Penny's, check the Cherubs people and see who is in your area. http://www.cherubs.uk.com/index.php

Actually, for newborns, I try to get them as fresh as possible, at 7 weeks, you aren't going to have a sitting up smiling baby, so you need to be aware of what type of images you can get with a 7 week old, so you aren't disappointed.  I do newborn, then do 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year.  At each of those ages, the baby reaches a different milestone, and that's what you want to capture. Hope that makes sense.

A friend of ours does this, lives in West Yorkshire but I think she travels all over Yorkshire and Lancashire (sorry I don't know where you are)
