UK ID Card???
« on: September 21, 2010, 09:38:50 PM »
Is there such a thing here as an ID card like we'd have back in the states.  Something to be used for identification, with your address and details on it, looks like a drivers liscense but of course is not....  I'm pretty sure ID Card would be the proper name for it...?
Anyway, I don't drive in the UK and I don't want to go through the hassle of getting a UK DL as it's not neccesary for me at all, but I've sometimes needed proof of address for things and I never have anything to show! What do UK Citizens use to identify themselves, and address, if they do not drive??

BTW- Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, wasn't sure if it should go in Trasportation with the DL topics??

Not really.  You can get a provisional license though.

Most places I've come across that want proof of address want bills in your name at your address. I don't think I've seen somewhere that would take a dl or permit as proof of address - as photo id yes, but not as address. But I may be completely wrong and places will.

Getting a provisional license is your best bet, and you don't have to do a thing about driving.

And places do take it as proof of address.

The government abolished the ID card before it was introduced -- but a few people who use this website will already have been issued with one as it went to foreigners first!

very interesting, thank you!  at first I was just curious but now I am having a lot of troubles with NatWest because of this, so I guess I am going to have to look into the provisional liscense.  I did have the forms for it, but I was a bit confused, am I correct that I have to send in my US AL with the form?  I don't want to give that up so that when I visit America I will have a US ID, AND so that I will have no hassles still driving in America.

No, you don't need to send your US license.

Instead, just use your passport and a utility bill.  that is really the standard form of identification.  A lot of places won't take a driving license as proof of address.
