Recommendation for "bundling" phone/cable/internet
« on: October 19, 2010, 05:51:36 PM »
We're still living with my mother-in-love in Greater London as we continue to look for employment and then, eventual accommodation.

Mum has her telephone, internet and cable tv (4 tellys in the house) each with a different provider (Virgin, Orange, etc.) She uses Talk Talk for her US calling plan and is quite happy with that.

Having lived outside the UK for 6 years, we're not sure where to start in investigating whether or not she could actually save money but receive better services by bundling these utilities with one company.

Or - contrary to the way it is in the States - is it actually better to have these utilities with independent companies than all in one?

Thanks.

we use virgin media and it's a bundle. worked out cheaper for us. I think you'll just have to go on their website and check. they are offering free installation right now plus a credit of £50 so may want to do this sooner rather than later!

We had a Sky bundle with phone/satellite TV/internet.  The actual service was fine, but their customer service/general competence left a lot to be desired.  From what I've read on here and around some of the review sites, there's nobody in the whole industry that's doing a particularly good job, so when we moved recently we looked for cheap alternatives.

For TV we decided to use Freeview rather than going back to Sky, and it hasn't felt at all like we're missing anything.  If you watch a lot of TV or want a lot of movie channels, you might notice, but Freeview gives you all the major networks and a good selection of the alternative channels, too.  I recommend it highly.

We're only getting a land line for broadband, so we got it from our broadband provider, which is PlusNet.  I just called to have it set up yesterday, so I can't comment on whether or not they're any good.  As I said before, it seems like all the broadband/phone/TV companies are in a contest to see which one can do the worst overall job, so we picked the one that was the cheapest (and offered £40 cash back).   :)

For calling overseas I got a Skype To Go number which I can call from my cell phone and then enter whatever overseas number I want.  (It sounds more complex than it is.)

If you're totally stuck, moneysavingexpert.com is a good site to start searching through all the static.
