Kids Christmas Decorations - make them!
« on: October 24, 2010, 05:57:09 PM »
 :D
I decided this year we should make a few Xmas ornaments like I did when we were kids...
I only remember the clothespin reindeer and I know that is SUPER easy...

What did you make?
Ideas?

Salt dough ornaments! I love those! In fact, my sister-in-law and I (both completely grownup) made them a couple of years ago! But they're easy for children too - my mother always used to make them with me.

Red and green paper ring garlands & stringed pop corn were standard in my childhood.  :)

These ornaments I made with my daughter and with a brownies troop-- very easy, and popular- they smell lovely!
There are many versions online-- some have glue in the recipe-- those would probably last longer! I have also used white fabric paint to decorate- and it looks like white icing--just be sure noone eats them :)

In addition to the salt dough, paper rings, and popcorn strings-

Paper snowflakes, pipe cleaner candy canes, aluminum can stars, old lightbulbs painted and hung up with a gold string, anything with lots of glitter, and borax crystal snowflakes/curls
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

WOAH PB - I dont know what most of those are! Darn I will be researching but I am sure the cost of getting all the stuff I will need might add up BUT will be great Xmas presents for the kids to give out ;-)

oh man.  Great idea.  My mother still has two of my ornaments from when I was tiny- one we call the donut (a salt dough 'wreath' which requires a massive branch to hold it's bulk) and one which is a styrofoam bell shape which was once painted red.

Oh, and a paper angel cutout with my 1st grade photo stuck to the back of it, then laminated.  Now that I type that out, I'm tempted to do something similar with my son.  Just need to find some laminating paper...

We used to do the popcorn strings, snowflakes, and paper chains too. I am struggling to remember anything else we may have done as kids now. One thing I have done for the past to Christmas Seasons was making our own Christmas Stockings. It's great fun and super easy, plus they look so nice. It does require you to sew though so it may be a bit much depending on how old your kiddos are.

LOL! I had to laugh at this because I still have a salt dough angel which I made when I was tiny. The ones my mother made were beautiful, elegant and dainty ... my angel is a huge three-ton behemoth wearing a green and white spotted dress! And, yes, I always have to find the sturdiest tree branch to hold her!

Last year after we got married I got all of them JCPenney monogrammed stockings to match the one I had...DSD saw it and thought they were amazing! I am glad because they aren't even doing them anymore...they will last our lifetime.  Heck my dog even had one lol
