That stuff is like the old onion poultices of yore...  He might as well as stick on onion on his chest and burn some matches!

I don't dismiss homeopathy completely as some of it is based on traditional meds which can help to alleviate symptoms.

With kids you can't give them the meds you used to so using more natural approaches can work.

I think you are confusing homeopathy and herbal remedies.  Herbal remedies are based in traditional medicines and are often the basis of many of our modern medicines. Homeopathy is bunk and is nothing more than water.

The onion on the chest would do more than a Homeopathic 'remedy'.

Have a look at some of James Randi's videos on YouTube.

homeopathic remedies work on the basis of like cures like.  So, if you have a fever you take something that gives you a fever and you're cured!  (AKA the laws of similar)

add to this that with a homeopathic remedy what you are taking is a dilute solution: dilute to the point where there would be one molecule of the original substance in a sphere of water the size of the sun.  I wish I were exaggerating.

apparently the water remembers the substance diluted in it.  I'm not sure how it remembers the tincture of arnica but not (say) being a cup of tea earlier on in the molecule's personal history.

It's a bit more than that. It's based on the idea that if you take something your body reacts to it to try to create homeostasis so that when you reduce the amount you have the opposite reaction.  For example, if you took a laxative every day and then you reduce the amount you take drastically, you would become constipated, because your body treats taking the laxative as your "normal" state. The same kind of thing happens when people take nose drops for a long time.

There are some flaws in extending this to the theory around homeopathy but the above has some sense to it.

If he just has a cold, giving liquids (I assume the medicine is liquid) and some attention is probably as good a cure as any. If the medicine has a nice smell, it probably helps, too. Feeling good emotionally can help boost your immune system which can help you get better physically,

My mother used to have a saying - if you take medicine, a cold lasts seven days. If you don't take medicine, it lasts a week.

ETA: About the fever thing, that's kind of what DH says about drinking hot tea in hot weather. You drink hot tea, you sweat, you cool off.  It's all about working with the body's natural reactions.

Huh.

So the company that makes the cough and cold stuff the ex gave my kids... has just had a recall for their homeopathic teething tablets... because there's possibly too much belladonna in them!!

 :o :o

Great, just great.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yah, that's what I was trying to say in my first post, I wouldn't want my kid eating senna or belladonna even if it was in a supposedly tiny concentration.

Well on the plus side, you would have noticed by now if Jake was suffering from any toxicity issues and it proves your point to your ex :P

Yeah, I was talking to someone else, too, and the homeopathic industry just isn't regulated like other meds. So you can probably find a lot of variation in concentration from company to company and maybe even batch to batch.

Also not a fan/believer in any way of homeopathy.  Herbalism, though... maybe, for some things.

For example, with a cold/chest congestion, if you can get him to drink peppermint tea, it really does help loosen/clear things.  Of course, so does good, old-fashioned VapoRub. :)

Just out of curiosity did he buy it because it's Homeopathic, or because of all the no additives it claims?

Personally on the surface if I were in a (strange) country and not completely trusting of children's medicines that I didn't grow up with, and concern for what's going into my children's bodies I might buy this.  But then again you look at the ingredients and go WTF.  Phosphorus and Sulfur...  Hmm, set the baby on fire from the inside.   ???

Did you send Jake off with the meds and he ran out or did he just not listen to what you told him to get?

I'm pretty sure he didn't buy it. Let's just say there's another person who seems to believe they have some say in things. ::)

I gave my ex the OTC cough and cold stuff recommended by his pediatrician and he chose to get this other stuff... likely from the influence of this other person. Though I can't be certain.

As I stated above, I'm not necessarily opposed to natural therapies. It's actually more the fact he didn't tell me, nor did he seem to consider it could have adverse reactions with other meds they might have been on (Jake wasn't on anything, but Sammy is).

Oh.  :-\\\\  Gotcha.  I know about Sammy from previous posts.  But if this other person's not clued up, or thinking they know best I'd kick someone in a bit.  (But that's just me.)  I hope you work it into the ex's head not to start just buying stuff, or give (them) a list of meds that are safe to buy and give to the kiddies in the event of XYZ (preferably leaning towards Sammy).

Hope you find a way to avoid this from happening again in the future!
