Hi, everyone.  I just signed up on this website, so I apologize if this is the wrong place for this type of post.  I currently live in Ohio, but have had a "love affair" with the United Kingdom since I was younger.  I have always wanted to live there.  I am single, 27, and a teacher in Sandusky, OH.  I feel that a move is way past due.  My friend is going to start a post-grad program in London this August, so I feel that she is a little push for me.

Does anyone know anything about teaching in or around London?  I teach high school English (I've taught American Lit, British Lit, and World Lit, and writing).  I will do anything, and even thought about going back to school for a Doctorate (I have a masters right now in Education, and a bachelors in English from Ohio State).  I am a firm believer in the Lewis Carroll quote:  "If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there."  I'm finally ready for this move!  I am so grateful to have found this website!

Thank you :)

Getting a visa to work in the UK is very hard.  Unfortuately, secondary English teachers are not a shortage occupation, so I think it's probably not going to be possible to find someone who can sponsor a visa for you.  If you choose to pursue a PhD in the UK, remember that student visas are not meant to lead to settlement, so once you finish your degree you will have to leave the country unless you can find sponsored work.  If you're just looking to live here for a few years and are willing/able to take on the cost of a degree, then the PhD route might work for you, but if you're hoping to stay longer or work, you will have an uphill battle making that happen.  The UK government is currently working on closing some routes for immigrants and making the ones they don't close harder, so it's definitely a challenge to immigrate here.

Do you have any other skills that could help you find a job?  Any recent UK or European ancestry?

First of all, hello and welcome aboard!   :)

Secondly, have a look around at the visa board and the job sections.  As historyenne said, it is quite difficult to get work permits here, but please feel free to collect as much information as you can and ask any questions you may have.   :)

Historyenne pretty much covered all the practicals, so I'll just say hello and welcome as a fellow Ohioan! I'm from Akron, but I've been to Sandusky a few times (then again, who hasn't for Cedar Point?). :)
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' Kurt Vonnegut

Thanks, everyone!  You are all so nice and welcoming!  I will look more into the jobs board.  I am kind of up in the air - I like teaching, but there are so many other things I would like to do.  If I could just stay in college and travel for the rest of my life, I'd be happy!  Haha.  I have been in the service industry for a long time, so I can bartend, serve, go for a barista gig, etc.

I've looked at bit at the American School in London - it teaches an American curriculum, so I was hoping they needed an American Lit teacher!

elle.davis - I taught in Cuyahoga Falls for 3 years and lived in Highland Square!

So nice to talk to you all - and thank you for the advice!  I very much appreciate it!  :)  Happy Holidays!
