Is this normal?

Hi all,

My fiancé arrived here in July on the fiancé visa and I immediately informed the tax credits that I needed to make a joint claim. To cut a long story short, it's taken this long to get near to getting it sorted because the first application form went missing in the mail. I obviously checked the box that told them he was under immigration control.

This morning a letter from the DWP came through with an appointment for my other half for an interview to determine whether or not he will get an NI number...he has to take his passport with visa etc and it asks for an id card which he obviously hasn't got, I rang the tax credits to ask and she said just to keep the appointment and go along but I'm confused because I didn't think he would get an NI number on a fiancé visa. I understand that this is  to determine "if" he will be allocated a number and it's not that he will be but I've never heard of DWP appointments for tax credit purposes from anyone else on here...is this normal?

Not sure if anyone can help on this, just received a letter from the tax credits stating that because my other half has no national insurance number the claim can't be processed right now. Apparently the appointment at the DWP will confirm his identity and if he isn't entitled to one as we know he isn't HMRC will issue him with a temporary one for tax credit purposes only...has anyone on here been issued with a temp NINO whilst on a fiancé visa for tax credits purposes?

As far as I know there is no more 'temporary' numbers. But my NI number was issued in association with a tax credits claim and the process you're going through is exactly what we went through. Though it sounds like they're a bit more on the ball than with as ours that took them 5 months to realise I didn't have a NI Number and 7 months to process in total.

Have you been married yet MissJo? Even if not as the partner of a British Citizen he is legally entitled and required to be on a claim for tax credits even though his visa prohibits public funds.

Really, this isn't something to worry about.

Thanks for the reply We get married on 15th December but I informed the tax credits the day after he arrived in July that I was no longer entitled a single claim.

It's like a kind of savings club right now, they're going to owe quite a bit of money back dated but with the wedding so close and Christmas it's not the best time for this lol

I've just re-read the back of the letter from the Tax Credits and it states " We may decide to give you a temporary reference number until your National Insurance number is allocated. This temporary reference is not a NI number. We will use this temporary number to process your claim but it does not mean that we will be able to pay tax credits".

I'm wondering if this means that we won't get anything until he gets his spouse visa and is issued with the NINO, in that case we're going to be looking at around end of January before this is all sorted
