Failing a course -- will Visa become invalid?
« on: November 17, 2010, 11:17:00 AM »
Long story but basically I applied to study in the UK because my boyfriend and I aren't quite ready to get married yet.  The university is in London -- in a rather dodgy area -- I was mugged and I am having panic attacks and don't really want to stay on the course.

If I fail this semester will my Visa be invalid and will I have to go back to the US?

GO TO Student Services!!!

Personally I think this is the best bet. I had a ill family member when I was studying and went to meet with the Student Services Therapist. She signed me off and talked to my lecturers about what has happening. That is really what they are there for and would be able to help you if something is effecting your work.

Thank you, that does seem the most sensible thing to do...

My heart just isn't in it though... I'm not interested in finishing the course or staying in London.  We would like to move to the countryside and I wouldn't take employment or anything.  We were planning on a fiance visa next year...

Unfortunately, you may not be able to just move to the countryside.  I know it's unappealing, but can you at least ring the student services and see what they say? At the very least it sounds like you should have a chat with someone about options, and it may make you feel less vulnerable to know what you can do instead of guessing. I'm sorry something so scary happened to you.

If you stop attending or if you fail out of the course and are no longer a student you will need to return to the US.

You need to do something about it before it gets this bad, like talk to your uni. Sorry you're in a bad situation but unfortunately you need to be proactive now to save yourself hassle in the future. Hope things improve for you!

I believe there's a lot of charities out there that deal with people who have been victims of crime, it may help to talk to someone, even your GP. Being mugged is a super scary experience x

Thank you Jennie and Cheesebiscuit,

I've now written to them to ask about transferring courses within the University but to another campus.  I just hope that is possible this late in the semester.

Thank you again for all of your advice everyone.  I just want to bury my head in the sand (well, Sussex anyway) but you are all right -- I can't just hide from the situation.

P.S.  please stay safe everyone!  (even in broad daylight, with other people around)

Yay. Hopefully you'll be able to sort everything out, you've taken positive steps anyway. I know how easy it is to bury your head in the sand, but you'll save yourself so much trauma by trying to confront this now.

best of luck!
