Going to USA, which formula to use?!
« on: November 06, 2010, 09:25:02 AM »
Hello!!

I hope someone can help.  I have a 6 mo. old and we are going to the states for 2 months (leaving 22 nov).  We are currently using the liquid (ready made) SMA weaning milk (the red one).  DD doesn't like powder so we've switched back to liquid.

I can't physically bring all that SMA over as it would take all my baggage allowance so I know I'll need to switch.  Does anyone have experience with this?  Has anyone switched before?

I see they have Gerber, Enfamil, and Similac.

Thanks for your help!

Enfamil is the best I think. My room mates daughter drank that and she never had any issues with it, was a gas-free happy baby! :D
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

There is no exact equivalent. There are some older threads on this you might find using the search, but the bottom line is you'll just have to try one and hope for the best. I personally suggest you try a store's own brand (i.e. Walmart, Target, Safeway) before buying name brand. Formula is a good deal more expensive here and if you're here 2 months, that adds up.

Both my sons were SMA babies and did just fine on Walmart's formulas.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

The two times DD has been to the US when she was on formula (we used Cow & Gate here) we used the WalMart brand and she did just fine.

I lived in American until about 2 weeks ago and Similac just had a huge recall of all their formula due to finding bugs in it.  Yuck!  Most shops pulled it from their shelves, so anything you see now would be a new batch, but I personally would stay away from Similac just to be on the safe side.  While I have never known anyone to use store-brand formula as suggested (DD is 5 months and only BF so far), I would imagine it is perfectly fine and in most cases the store-brand is just as good or better than name-brand.
