Gift Questions for the holidays...
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:20:59 PM »
I was wondering how you guys would handle this.

This year Noah is almost 5, and he really knows what he wants for the holiday season (or should I say, I know what he wants) and I have asked my sister and my parents for some cash so I could go and buy him these big gifts because we aren't going to see my parents again until February in Florida.

My sister is fine, but my mother isn't so keen on the idea because she says that the kids won't know the gifts are from her, she would rather buy them when we get to Florida in February so she can give them to him. Keep in mind her favorite shop is Big Lots, and she does tend to buy lots of stuff there...yes, for me to bring back home to Manchester...

I always ask her to please buy one toy that costs $100, not 100 toys that cost $1 each...but she isn't into that. She said she doesn't care if I throw the toys away when she leaves, but try telling that to a small child. I just want the kids to have one big toy (maybe to compliment the smaller toys I am giving them the rest of the nights for Chanukah...)

I say that I will make a big fuss about the gifts being from Momma & PopPop, but she isn't so sure. So how do I handle this, I want to celebrate Chanukah in December, not in February...how do I convince her that the kids will know who the gifts are from??

(this is part vent, part question really)

Tough one! I have no idea what to offer here, as it sounds you have already spent a lot of breath explaining to her how you feel.  :-\\\\ If you have already told her all of this, then I really don't know what else you can do! Good luck with it!

Do you use Skype?  If so I'd have the gifts opened "in front of" Momma and PopPop. That way they get to see the reactions and make a big fuss.

Thats a good idea! I will suggest that to them, we can light the chanukah candles together!

Yeah! That's a great idea. We do that with my mom and pop sometimes, too.  :) I should've thought of that!  :P

That was also going to be my suggestion!

And still make a big deal about them being from Momma and PopPop - leading up to opening, etc! - So they completely know!!!  :)

I can imagine that if you're away on holiday, you definitely don't want suitcases of toys coming back!
