Wallis Simpson's jewels

Today is one of those days you wished you had eight million GBP. Nice taste.

Wouldn't you like a Cartier gold and diamond necessaire du soir?

I would never wear anything owned by that woman.

She has been dead over 20 years.

At the end of they are just pretty shiny things from a well known French jeweler.

I like the style from that era.

Ugh, no.  Sorry, but I find that sort of thing gaudy.  I mean, a panther bracelet?  A flamingo pin?  I don't care if Cartier designed it, it's still too big and too flashy, at least for my taste.

So what?

There are some 'styles' from that era I find deeply repulsive.

They are things owned by an anti-semite and Nazi sympathizer. I don't know if she wore these things when she shook hands with Hitler, but just her reputation is enough to taint them.

I don't believe in the power of inanimate objects, I think that giving things some mythical properties, or taint, or personality because someone owned them is ridiculous. A pair of shoes owned by Hitler is just a pair of shoes. I would neither deride them nor put them on a pedestal because of their last owner. If it were up to me I'd treat them like any other pair of shoes.

Yes, some objects have historical significance or can give insight into the time but most are just objects. Just stuff. The most important thing to me about Nazi memorabilia would be to keep it out of the hands of those who would canonize it, perhaps in museums or national archives.

One of the most interesting stories I read on this subject is the Jewish script writer who bought a watch as a young man which then turned out to be a Nazi object.

On the other hand, if you wouldn't want your money to go to the estate of someone  who's belief's you didn't agree with I could see that. Also all of that stuff is godawful hideously gaudy.

;) That's what I find so fabulous about the fashion of that generation. It took guts to wear huge hats, enormous brooches, etc. Slightly different from the throwaway fashion culture today.

My apologies if some found the topic offensive, hardly my point on a thread in 'chit chat'.

I wonder who gets the $$ from the sale of her jewelry, who are her heirs?
