One mistake I made when I lived in Australia was spending most of my time with other Americans. I should have spent all of my time with Aussies, which would have helped me to better adapt to Aussie society.
Since you have moved to the UK- do you try and befriend mainly fellow American expats, or do you try and avoid the American groups and thus befriend mainly native Britons?

Heh, I couldn't find any other Americans while I was on working holiday in Australia  :)

I currently don't know any other American expats (I am definitely not actively avoiding them) so because of circumstance, I am hanging out with the natives.

I hang out with people I meet through circumstance -created by life and what I get involved  in.  My friends, from around the world are a mix of old school mates, co-workers, fellow musicians, people with common interests, folks from the same voluntary group networks,  etc.  I don't care where they're from, their backgrounds, etc, friends are friends. I don't seek out friends for any specific reason, but you learn who is cool and fun and iteresting and who you want to hang out with through life.   :)

As long as they are sarcastic and have a filthy sense of humor, I don't care where my friends are from.

(But in reality, while it's nice to occasionally connect with an american, I don't seek them out, I'm just friends with the cool people)

At the moment, I don't hang out with any Americans but that's not out of some intention to avoid them. I have a British partner and his friends are British. My work colleagues are English. I also have quite a few friends from other parts of the world which makes sense when you consider how international London is. I don't avoid or seek out Americans.

I prefer to spend time with my friends, no matter where they're from. I'm lucky because I married into a very good group of friends, so I didn't feel too lonely when I moved here. I did try to meet a few Americans that first year I was here but I found it sort of awkward meeting up with people simply because we come from the same country. I suppose I didn't feel the need to meet more of my countrymen because this forum was enough for me.

I am friends with a guy from Michigan who I met through my group of friends. He's been in the UK since he was a teenager so doesn't feel like a total American although he sounds like one. We get along really well but we never talk to each other about "American" things (you know, like things we miss, things we wish we had brought over etc etc). I suppose that we just don't think of each other as fellow countrymen, we're just mates.
There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared:  twins.

At first I didn't think about it when I moved, but then a new American teacher came to my school and I agreed to meet up with her because it was a huge transition and I knew it would be nice to talk to someone who had been through it recently.

Ultimately though I hung out with the mostly British staff of my very lovely co-workers as well as an Aussie who started the year with me and we did some travelling together. Same in my second school, I felt like I'd never get any references or cultural understanding without having been with them most of the time :)

I don't care where they are from really...its all a matter of who is my friend and who is around ;-)

I don't have a preference since I have friends on both sides of country.

I completely agree. I'm not bothered about where someone is from, I think the friend chemistry doesn't really depend on that. I mean, I've met some other Americans since I've lived here that I didn't have much in common with, and there are English people that I have a lot in common with. I enjoy my friendships with both! I definitely have more online friends who are American (or Canadian... you know who you are!  ;)) because of this forum, but I also have some online British friends (yes, also from this forum!  :P) and of course, I don't have a preference among any of you guys - all of your opinions and insights are valuable!  :-* I do wish I had a few more English girlfriends to hang out with, but it's probably my own fault for not contacting people more often.  :-\\\\
