"No Children" Tenacy Agreements
« on: January 20, 2011, 09:55:13 AM »
Hi All,

We have been looking at 2 bedroom places in London (Zone 2 mostly) and have come across the no children policy a few times, unfortunately at the places we liked.
In many states of the US it is illegal to discriminate based on having a family, but I'm guessing not here? I haven't been able to find out much info on this.

DH and I do not have kids. We do want to have a baby in about 2 years time, shortly before we move back to the States, and I was hoping to not have to move before then because of a weird tenancy agreement. I haven't lived anywhere for a year straight for the past 8 years and I am tired of moving.

Is this discrimination legal? And what are my rights (if any) as a tenant if I become pregnant?

Thanks,
Danielle

It is legal, but I am not sure of your rights if you get pregnant.

You could ask your local CAB.  http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_family/home_and_neighbourhood_index_ew/renting_a_home_index_ew/renting_from_a_private_landlord.htm#Right_to_stay_in_the_accommodation

It looks like according to that page thye can't discrimnate based on pregnancy.  But then if you are on a month to month I am sure they could find an excuse to get you out.

I hate renting.
