Anyone know bout EU member state Identity Cards ??

Hi everyone.

I have posted related questions in the past and we seem to have made little headway since then but i hope you guys can shed some light into this.
We have tried almost everything to open a cash card account since we have been here but our life has been on a deep freeze since you really cant do anything in this country without it..
Hubby and i have been in london for 1.5 months now and its been a challenging time to say the least...but to cut a very long story short, we have experienced a very hard time trying to open a cash card account . ( utlility bill is non existant where we live, no counsil tax attached to our flat , too late to apply for voters row etc etc )...anyway one of Hallifax's requirements to show proof of address is to provide " Current EU member State Identity Card " .

I am an EU national from Austria (hubby is American) but when i called my embassy in London they said they have never heard of such an ID card.
Does anyone know anything about this ?
Also i have been told that we could transfer our american express charge card ( the light green one ) into a UK american express card by simply supplying AmEx with our current UK address.

BTW lanlord tenant agreement done by letting agents does not count as lease agreement (for the purpose of opening cash card account)...which is what we have.

Won't they accept a passport instead of that? some EU countries have ID cards - I am pretty sure Italy and France have them - but others don't, like UK and it would seem, Austria. I don't see how that would prove your address anyway.  I'm sorry to hear you are still struggling with the banks and your landlord, hope things work out for you soon.  If you have got jobs here, maybe your employers can help you get an account with whatever bank they use?

Surely a phone bill (landline esp BT not mobile) would serve as proof of address. Or a gas or electricity bill.

We have no electricity meter in our flat, the landlord has hot wired our flat with a downstairs business....we have decided to move out, we were basically screwed on several fronts...its a long story but live and learn i suppose . Yea i dont think Austria has the EU ID'S..the embassy has never heard of them. I guess we will have to wait until we get the heck out of our flat and find another one...one that has an electricity meter.
