Cake toppers?
« on: January 03, 2011, 09:47:57 PM »
We're having 3 different cakes for the wedding, 2 of which will be made by friends. The bottom tier will be a chocolate Guinness cake with cream cheese icing, and on top of that will be a Victoria sponge shaped like a winter camouflage Tiger tank (we like tanks, Tigers are my favourite), and I thought it would be fun to have a cake topper of a bride and groom on the tank. The only problem is that the usual figurines are short-haired clean-shaven grooms and blonde or brunette brides, but as you can see by my photo, the boy has long hair and a beard and I'm a redhead. We really can't afford to spend £150 getting custom made toppers as I've seen on many websites, so I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of cake toppers that either offer some flexibility on the looks, or pre-made non-traditional brides and grooms, or custom toppers that don't cost a crapload.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

If you search Etsy you can find millions of custom wedding toppers that aren't expensive.

http://www.etsy.com/

You can even get a red-head lego topper http://www.etsy.com/listing/55789175/lego-bride-groom-wedding-minifig-cake?ref=sr_list_12&ga_search_query=lego+wedding+cake+topper&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title&filter[0]=handmade

Have you considered not having them? I know they're "traditional" but...cakes look lovely without toppers :)

If I were bothered about traditional things, my cake wouldn't be shaped like a tank! I just thought it would be fun to have the figures sitting on the tank and looking at least a bit like us. I do like the Lego idea, and I think it will be the cheapest as well!

I second the Etsy recommendation! Just make sure you check the shipping. I'm looking at this shop since she does both men in kilts and glasses:

though if money wasn't an object, I'd want a customer version of this topper:

So I ended up getting these off ebay, they're adorable and cost a whopping £12 including shipping. The boy was stunned at such a high price for Lego, but then I showed him the prices of other cake toppers! ;)

Those are the cutest things EVER and will look awesome on a tank! What a clever idea!!

I'm actually hoping to find just ONE redhead bride with short red hair somewhere out there NOT wearing a pant suit.  I've already found a groom in a kilt, but my likeness seems to be an anomaly.
