Wagamama curry sauce
« on: January 06, 2011, 04:15:18 PM »
Hello all, I was wondering if anyone knows a curry sauce that is similar to the one Wagamama's uses for their dish, chicken katsu curry. I bought a curry sauce that looked similar in Tesco's and it was absolutely disgusting. There are so many curry sauces and pastes out there. I hope there is one like it. It's my new favorite dish. Thanks in advance!

You probably wont find it at tescos, you'll just find the sweet nasty cheap chip shop style curry sauce which looks the same colour bleugh!

If you want a quick/instant version it's available in Japanese supermarkets  and is  called "golden curry" and made by S&B, it's definitely the best instant version.

When I make it at home (katsu curry) from scratch I normally make Katsu bbq sauce which has a worcestershire sauce base - http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Chicken-Katsu but have started to use ponzu and daikon instead :)

The Wagamama's one is going to be a Japanese curry and most the curry sauces you will readily find will be Indian curries, so the taste will be entirely different (as you discovered)

This recipie looks close-ish:

Thank you very much for the information. I know there are some small Japanese food stores in town. Will go look at the weekend!

I have that cookbook but the katsu curry is not included.

Bummer. Otherwise, do you like the cookbook? I've been contemplating getting it.

You want a House Brand Vermont Curry. I have no idea why its called Vermont Curry...but it is the best for anything Ton Katsu!!

I had to add, before my husband and I had kids, I used to make him Chicken Ton Katsu on a saturday night if I wanted some nookie. Its a true aphrodesiac  in my house! Lol!

I do like it, especially for the sauces. I found mine at a charity ship for £3 so it was not too much of an investment. :)
