Notifying US authorities of change of name
« on: January 28, 2011, 03:55:35 PM »
Does anyone know if we have to notify the US authorities of the change of surname of my US citizen finacee, after we marry, other than changing passport details.

As far as passports are concerned, when is the best time to change her name on her passport? Immediately after we marry, or can we wait to do this?

Should probably change the name with Social Security. You have to fill in a new application and get a new card issued.
What about driving license? She may want to drive whenever she returns for visits.
As for passport, I would get it out of the way soon after the marriage. (I didn't intend to change my name but found there was a lot of hassle with bank accounts and so on so ended up getting the passport changed as well)

I kept my maiden name in the US and left my maiden name on my US passport, and on my  UK passport when I gained UK citizenship.

She doesn't have to change it if she doesn't want to.

All my bank accounts are in my married name.

I intend to go by my married name but have no plans to legally change it.
