Confused about NHS
« on: January 20, 2011, 09:12:22 AM »
Hi everyone! I've been reading the posts looking for info on finding a doctor in the UK. I moved here at the end of December on a fiance visa. I was under the impression that I was not covered by NHS until I was on a spousal visa. From what I've read, it seems like I'm covered now. If that's true, how do I go about getting an NHS number? Does anyone have a recommendation for a good doctor here?

Applied for spousal settlement visa online: 25th Oct
Biometrics: 26th Oct
Apps Sent via FedEx to NY (Priority service): 27th Oct
Visa Arrived at NY consulate: 1st Nov
Email confirmation of UK Visa app opened: 1st Nov
Request for more documents: 16th Nov

You need to register with a local GP (General Practitioner) to access NHS. They will register you and send your information to the local PCT (Primary Care Trust) and they will in turn register you with the NHS. You may or may not receive an NHS Card.

Fiance(e)'s & Dependents are eligible to NHS Services, you just have to register.

As far as a good doctor, you may want to register with the GP that your fiance is registered with as there are catchment areas that GP's cover and you may be limited as to where you live.

Florence Road surgery is quite good if they are accepting new patients.
