dual citizenship USA/UK- pros and cons?
« on: January 24, 2011, 09:11:41 AM »
I am a US citizen and permanent UK resident- having originally arrived here nearly 5 years ago via my husband's highly skilled worker visa. I am considering applying for UK citizenship, and I'm assuming that it's a straighforward process. I see plenty of pros about having dual citizenship...are there any cons that I need to be aware of? Thanks in advance for any insights!

Struggling to think of any really.  I suppose the having to renew two passports?

ETA: As hubby pointed out the hassle and cost of renewing two passports is sure to be less than whatever UKBA throws at people in future

Pretty much the only downsides are the tax implications - and those only apply in very specific circumstances.  That, and if the UK and US went to war you could be in a bit of a pickle.  But that's rather unlikely :-)

Yeah but if you're talking about the tax implications I think you mean, they would apply whether she gets UK citizenship or not.

You would also likely be disqualified from holding some jobs in a security agency (MI6, CIA, NSA etc.) for having a second citizenship.  Certainly you would not be allowed to be a bodyguard to the US president, for example.

Thanks for the input....I have no plans to work in the government security sector, so I should be fine! ;) I just want to be sure I'm not missing anything...

I know if applying for security clearance in the AF you had to give up your other citizenship, but it didn't mean you couldn't get the job.
