Packing - what info will I need for customs?
« on: January 27, 2011, 09:13:50 AM »
I'm starting to pack up the boxes (plastic bins, actually) that I'll be shipping ahead.  I'm assuming that I'll need to provide some sort of list of items for customs clearance.

How specific does this list need to be?  For example, can I list 'crafting items,' or do I need to list each item: 'Yarn, knitting looms (4), knitting needles (4), embroidery hoops (3)...' etc?  And do I need to list a value for the items?  How do I determine that, particularly for things like quilts or tea towels that were homemade gifts?

And, if I'm shipping them via UpakWeShip (which is my plan), will I need a separate list/form for each box, or will there just be one form for the pallet/shipment?  Should I label each box?  I was kind of planning on that a bit anyway, since I'll want to be able to find things in a hurry when they arrive.

If anyone has any ideas/advice, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

I wasn't incredibly specific, more listed categories like "clothes" "CDs" "DVDs" etc.  Definitely think a list for your own use is good though.

I ended up shipping 14 of those rubbermaid totes plus two trunks and a couple pieces of furniture that had belonged to my grandparents.  Having a list of what was in which tote made unpacking much easier!

I had 32 1x1 boxes. 28 were labelled "book" and the rest were labelled "clothes and household items".  No issues.  ;D

Ok, but did you have to list values for anything, like you do when you mail things?

I used Upakweship...
I had to list basics like clothes, towels ect..

I did HAVE my own list of what was in each box such as 4 purses, 8 towels ect..
I labeled my boxes to death with my own stickers box 1 of 10 and so on...
This way when they showed up, I counted each box.
I only had one picture frame break (I didnt wrap it well enough) but I knew what was in each box in case something broke I could file a claim.

Since everything was used in the boxes I did list values of the cost to REPLACE each thing so if I had to file an insurance claim I could.  I think I had to list a value per box (in case it was lost or damaged).

Keep your list with you, in fact I would send it to yourself via email so you have it anywhere.

good luck!

PS: Upakweship will give you all the forms you need

I guessed at a total value (my book collection is elaborate but probably not worth much to anyone else), and I also used UPAKWESHIP, so I filled in the paperwork they needed, but it was an estimate.
