Im planning on moving there..... blagh blagh
« on: February 12, 2011, 08:35:23 AM »
Here's the gist of it.
I'm WANTING to move there. I'm from the northwest (United States). It seems close enough. ha ha I really need some info though. What kind of budgets did you have, after you bought your visa's. Money that you had to rent a flat and the rest till you had a job. Maybe tell me how easy it was finding a job? Also was it hard finding a flat? maybe suggest some areas to move into. I'm not looking into buying a place in the ghetto of the UK. Is there a way to find roomates?

BHBC is right, you need to explore visa part first before you even consider the related expenses. Unless you hold some sort of EU Citizenship or UK Citizenship or are married to a British or EU Citizen you may find it VERY difficult to obtain a visa.

Currently the only option you may have is a Tier 2 General Visa: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier2/general/

Nobody 'buys' a visa.  You review the requirements, make sure you meet them, make an application, pay the application fee... then you cross your fingers and wait.

Hello Jay!  Several of us here that want to be there....its not easy at all.  Immigration to any country in today's world climate is pretty tough actually.

Loads of good information on this site as well as links to official government sites giving UK visitation, immigration, employment/work, and visa information.  Peruse around a bit and you'll be better 'in the know' in no time.

My anecdotal experience thus far is finding that permanent relo will take at least 5 years-ish...and work visas are becoming very difficult to come by.  If the 'phd' of your user name indicates an educational/vocational designation, perhaps you might find some opportunity within the higher educational system in the UK, but perhaps those positions may also be very hard to come by for a non-UK based educator.

I own a business and hope to relo myself and the biz to the UK in the future. From what I've been able to find, an 'entrepreneurial/investor' visa shall require 200K pounds (about 360K usd) to be shown in financial holding for at least three months prior to applying for a visa.  Work visas for traditional employment arrangements are extremely limited as the economy is producing an excess of available skilled workers, thus not many UK employers would be open to considering CVs from non UK folks.

Hope you're able to find the information you need and that the opportunity presents itself for you to make your dream a reality!  It takes hard work, persistence, dedication and a good chunk of funding but it certainly IS possible!  :)
