wire query
« on: January 19, 2011, 07:38:11 PM »
I regularly get wires into a US bank account from the UK and Greece. I'm really frustrated because I incur a fee of about $40 each time for 'foreign currency exchange'. The fees is not coming from my bank, it's coming from theirs.

Now, I've had words with all parties involved, and it seems that there is nothing I can do. Has anyone had a similar issue, or any advice?

I don't know if this would work in your situation, but I started using Paypal when I was in the UK. For a considerably smaller fee than the $40 my bank was charging (they charged the $40 wire fee because I was wiring money from my US bank to a UK bank..... International wire transfer) I was able to have Paypal withdraw the money from my bank, then I transferred that money into my husband's paypal account and then he transfered it to his UK bank account. he could then withdraw at our leisure. I know it's probably a lot more steps than a transfer.... But it gave us an extra £20 for Chinese food. Haha.

The only bad part about Paypal is it does thake 3-5 working days to get your transfers. And I noticed the few times I did it that the exchange rate was a couple cents higher than what It was for the day... But all in all it still saved me about $30 per transaction in the long run.
There are two kinds of people.  People who say what they want, and people who DO what they want. Which one will you be?
