Returning to US on round trip ticket

Hi there,

I am returning to the US next month with my husband who has successfully secured his immigrant visa.

Looking at flights it seems that in general we can save up to 30-40% by purchasing round trip instead of one way tickets.

My question is, is there any reason why buying round trip tickets could cause a problem if we don't plan to actually use the return portion?

No problem what so ever...my family will be doing the exact same thing. We've just scheduled the return for late October, in case we should need to return for any unforseen reasons (my husband has an elderly parent).

When I moved to the UK I had a round trip ticket (it was half the price!) but didnt use the return side back to the States.

I just called BA a week or so before the returned flight was scheduled and advised them I wouldnt be using the fare. They advised they couldnt refund my money as I purchased my ticket during a promotion, but would cancel the seat. He actually said it was quite common and I wasnt the only one who did what I did for that flight.

I would expect the same if using the ticket to move to the US

Just paid £500 each with BA for Roundtrip tickets that would have been £870 one way....crazy!!!

You can run into trouble if you book a roundtrip and don't use the first part of the trip.

I know a few airlines used to cancel the return portion of the trip if you didn't fly out on the first part.
