Only if you're watching them live. I'm sure they'll change that at some point, but for right now, if you watch programmes after they have aired, you don't need one.
Yes, that's the understanding we have of it--bet it will change at some point, though!

Once I naturalize, I imagine we will start paying it even though we'll never own a TV, as we do watch a LOT of stuff on the iPlayer and listen to Radio 4 and BBC7 constantly. (DH seems to prefer buying ever larger monitors instead of buying TVs though.). I love the BBC and don't mind paying for it if I'm not also frantically saving for one £800 charge after another.

You don't need a licence to listen to radio (or watching iPlayer)

I know. I would pay anyway (I think they let you). I was brought up donating to NPR, so I imagine that's what it all stems from. :)

Yes, I remember when they did away with the radio-only licence in the late 1960s.  At that time a radio-only licence was £1 5/-, and a TV+radio licence was £6.  I've lived in the US for several decades, I hate to think how much the licence is now.. probably £20 or more??

Our TV license (which I cancelled this week) was £150.50 per annum.

Are you serious? A colour TV licence currently costs £145.50 and a  black and white one  currently costs £49.00.

[edit] plus a £5 charge for using Direct Debit

Whoa more than I thought..
When I was at university in the sixties, I tried to buy a radio licence, thinking I wanted to help out the BBC (a sentiment reflected by a poster earlier on this page.)  At the Post Office they told me I could not, as the college had one licence that covered all residents.  Does this still apply in situations like a Hall of Residence or other multiple occupancy situations?

Nope, now each room in a hall of residence needs to have its own licence. Tellies in shared areas can just go with one licence.
