NYC to London
« on: March 03, 2003, 07:36:21 AM »
Hello everyone.

I'm 31 F NYC and married to my hunny of five years who lives in Londong (we got married in December) we still live in seperate countries and are starting to get our act together to live in the same place, London.

I've been to the UK several times and I am comfortable with it but I know there are things that erk me and I am sure I will have questions about paperwork and other things.

My biggest worry is actually finding work once I get there.

Welcome in advance to the UK.  You are absolutely right that you will find many things to irk you (just read some of the posts here to see how common that is).  The secret is to accept that things will be different and that that does not make them 'wrong' or even 'lesser'.  And then make sure that you allow yourself to b*tch and moan as much as you need to - you will get all the support you need from your fellow expats on this site.

As far as getting a job is concerned, as long as you have the required paperwork, you will find that work in London is plentiful and you should have no problems getting a job.

Hello Phena_Gen, congrats on your recent wedding, and welcome. :) A lot of us have been through the long distance relationship ordeal, I spent the first year and a half of my marriage away from my hubby, and never mind the year and a half apart before that.

Feel free to post questions and erks. I'm irked very often, by lots of things. ;) But I enjoy experiencing the differences too. I hope your plans fall into place quickly and easily for you, best of luck. :)

oh yes and I think much faster then I type and never check my self doh! LOL

Thanks guys.  That is why I wanted to find some other soon to be or already expats who I could share my secret Americanisms with.

I've had some good reactions to be an american and some bad ones when I've been over there but after five years of travelling over there I think I can handle myself but it is nice to have somewhere to gripe. :P

Welcome Phena_Gen,

Congrats on recent marriage...  and good luck with move...

I am still in the waiting to get married stage and being apart with my honey now for 2.5 years...  but we are getting there.

We will be living up north, so I will not be able to answer the job question very well...  I have a feeling you will have quicker luck at finding work than I will though.   Seems you need to be in London area or the bigger job market.

And the fact that I don't drive!  I actually like London, though I guess growing up in NYC London is less of a culture shock at first however I've enjoyed vacations in both the Lake district and Cornwall.  My fantasy is to someday have a small house somewhere country like and not in the city.  Maybe when I win the lottery!

My husband always seems to win 10pounds in the lottery while I've never won one red cent in the New York Lottery.

Welcome to the site. I'll be interested in how difficult finding work is for you. I would like to find work there also, although my job search is done from a distance, and I'm pretty much relying on the internet.
