Moving to England this summer
« on: April 23, 2011, 07:22:19 PM »
Hello!  I just found this site, and while I am overjoyed, I am also feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the information and endless pages of posts.  :-\\\\   Just wanted to introduce myself.  I am planning to make the big move from the Midwest (US) to the Greater London area this summer in order to join my partner.

I'm feeling a bit despondent today about the fact that they apparently don't really have the Easter Bunny in England.  My partner had never heard of the Easter Bunny actually coming to visit houses to hide eggs, bring candy in baskets, etc.  To him, the Easter Bunny was more of a theoretical figure that "is just somehow part of it all (Easter)."  I am sure there is a proper thread on Easter traditions in England somewhere around here so I will go see if I can find one.  Thanks!

Hi there, welcome to UK-Y and good luck with your move to the UK :).

Thanks!

Don't worry - although it isn't as big a thing in the UK as it is in the US, I definitely remember the Easter Bunny being around when I was growing up in the UK - the 'Easter Bunny' (a.k.a. Mum and Dad) used to leave a basket of Cadbury's Mini Eggs on our doorstep every Easter Sunday morning :P!

Here's a couple of links about Easter traditions in the UK: http://www.ukstudentlife.com/Ideas/Album/Easter-Sunday.htm and http://www.learnenglish.de/culture/easter.htm

Hello and Welcome!! I agree the Easter Bunny exsists here but I find Easter isn't as big of a thing here-- and most people don't do basket or hide egss, most people simply give each other chocolate Easter Eggs. The Chocolate Egss are yummy though!!

You can always do your own traditions here! Most people give chocolate eggs, but you can also get chocolate bunnies. Finding baskets is easy, and you could still boil and decorate eggs and hide them if you want to. Quite a few things are different here, but you really do get used to it and either go along with the way it's done here, or add your own traditions into it. Most of us still celebrate Thanksgiving and Fourth of July, even though no one else here does (still, it seems the British population doesn't mind joining in for a bit of turkey or a Fourth of July barbecue when invited!  ;))

Welcome to UKY!  :D

Welcome! This being my first holiday over here I will attest there is no shortage of Easter candy. Part of the fun of merging two cultures can be starting new traditions too! :)
Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.  A. Lincoln
