Hello all,
My husband and I just arrived in the UK on Thursday! I came across this site several weeks ago, and found the lists of things to bring (and not bring) to be particularly helpful and informative when shopping and packing for the big move. Now that we are actually here, I figured it was time to register and introduce myself.
I am a California native married for 10 years to a DC native, both in our very early 40s. We were living in the Washington DC area -- where we just renovated our home a year and a half ago -- when my husband was offered a close approximation of his dream job. The only catch: it's in Farnborough! After much discussion, we decided to go for it. We've always wanted to live overseas, and this was the perfect opportunity. We decided to live in London so we could be in the city and he could commute to work by train, so we just signed a lease on a small house in Wimbledon, and are currently staying in a furnished apartment a few blocks away until our belongings arrive from the US and the lease term begins. I was working as a Web producer for the Discovery Channel back home, and am hoping to find a similar job once we get settled here.
We don't know a soul here, so we'd love to meet up with other expats in the Wimbledon area, if there are any. And if anyone has advise on the best/cheapest ways to keep in touch with friends and family back in the States (Skype, mobile plans, etc) please share!
