'Open House'?
« on: April 18, 2011, 06:58:35 PM »
Hi

I'm wondering how common in the UK is the term 'Open House' to mean a party that people can come to at any time. Following our wedding, we'd like to have an 'open house' rather than a traditional reception where everyone is expected to be there at an appointed time. Will this terminology make sense here, or should we express it some other way?

thanks

RH

My husband said that his understanding of that term here is that an "open house" is a house which is open all the time to anyone to stop on by (I'm not sure I really understood him to be honest)...that they wouldn't take it to mean a party where you could come and go at any time.

We've used the term as a party at Christmastime and people seemed to understand what we meant. Probably to make it clear what you mean just say 'come and go as you please!' on the invitation.

Or maybe a 'house party' from <time> to <time>?  :)
