Another licensing question...
« on: March 16, 2011, 05:53:34 PM »
Just wondering, i just recieved my FLR M and now want to apply for a UK drivers license, question is can I go to my local DVLA branch and apply and get it right there, or do I definitly have to post off for it?

Only reason im asking, im not keep on posting out my Residents Permit!!

Also, does anyone know if I would have to surrender my Maryland lisence??

You have to post it...send it tracked and include a tracked envelope back (prepaid) make sure you write it down!

Heck I would make sure you have a copy of your visa ect just for your record as well.

As for surrendering thats a whole other bag of worms...
Depends on the state and taxes...

I didnt b/c my state doesnt have state tax ect...and I still own a home in mine.

You don't have to surrender your Maryland license to get a UK one.  The process doesn't take your previous driving history into account at all; it's as though you've never driven before.

Ah right, I just wasnt sure if MD had a law stating that you cant hold any other lisence as long as you hold a MD one...

I believe waht Camoscato is just saying from a UK perspective, the UK doesn't care how many licenses you have.  The UK won't require you to turn your Maryland license in.

What Maryland does, or does not, require is another story.

Torred...
From what I have read/seen some don't keep their US license b/c it makes them have ties and it is a tax thing.
I believe you asked somewhere else about a tax questions and MD and it was pretty straight forward.
Keep your MD license and go about your business.
Do you still have ties there? an address? ect?
I wouldn't sweat it, I dont think they will come knocking down your door.

You should be able to find out on the Maryland DMV website.  Or whatever they call it there.

The only ties I have with MD is having family there, but I dont have an "address" there.  The address on my lisence is the house I used to live at, which is where my sister lives.

Here's the contact info for the MVA.  I cant imagine they will care one way or another, but if you are concerned about it, I'd suggest contacting them directly.

I have a British DL & have never surrendered my US licence (and don't intend to). I'm not from Maryland but my state knows I live abroad, hence they don't bother to summon me for jury duty anymore...lol.

You must mail all your DL stuff here in the UK and since they will only accept your US passport and ID card, then you have to send it "Special Delivery" with a pre-paid return "Special Delivery" envelope.  I almost died when I got my passport back in the mail 2nd class only--no signature.   :o   They don't tell you that on the website.

Other than that, it's pretty painless.

Good luck!  :)

So I got a Application for a driving licence today from the post office, and on that application it states that I can apply online for it.  I logged on to the direct-gov web site and applied and paid the 50gbp fee, after I paid the fee, it states:

"Your payment has been accepted but in order for DVLA to complete your
application, it requires you to do one more thing.

You must send some information to DVLA.

You will receive an application completion form in the post - please allow 5
working days for delivery. Please complete this form and return it to DVLA so
that your driving licence application can be submitted for validation checks."

Well DUH!  I already have an application that told me to apply online, dont send me another one! Idiots!!!!

Sorry rant over.

This is actually what they are supposed to do if you don't have a UK passport and it says this in the instructions when you go to apply online (you will need to send them a photo for the licence and so they mail you the form so you can do this).

From the direct.gov.uk website (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Motoringtransactions/BeforeyouapplyD/DG_172559):

Quote
Important

During your online application, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will carry out identity checks for your security and protection. If DVLA can't fully verify and authenticate your identity you will be told what to do next at the end of the application.

The photo for your licence

You will need to provide a photo and signature for your new licence. If you have a UK passport DVLA will try to electronically capture these from the Identity and Passport Service.

If this isn’t possible, or you don’t want DVLA to use the photo on your passport, you will need to send a photo by post. At the end of your online application DVLA will post your application completion form to you for you to return with your photo.

If you have read and understand the above information and want to apply online click the link below.
