Restaurants in York
« on: April 19, 2011, 09:40:06 PM »
Hi all, I know I've posted on here about places you recommend in York but I was just wondering if anyone could recommend any good restaurants? I am here with my parents now and there were so many pubs to eat at as well as the typical chains. I know certain pubs were recommended to go to that have good beers, etc. Any recommendations for food would be great! Thanks so much in advance!

Are you only interested in pub food or are you looking for other types of cuisine?

For Indian, I like Viceroy on Monkgate.

DH has a website of reviews of cafes in York. You might find it helpful.

For Indian. one of my favorite restaurants is the Kings Ransom, close to the theatre and just round the corner from the Kings Head pub, the one that often gets flooded.

There's also a nice Thai restaurant on Micklegate (I think)

J Baker's!  http://www.jbakers.co.uk/.  Not necessarily cheap (but amazing value!).  I LOVE going there!  plus, it's across from an excellent used bookstore. :)

Thanks guys! We're not picky, we're just looking for some nice places- pubs or restaurants. We are going to pub hop tonight for a bit and then go get some food somewhere.

For pubs, I know lots of people like Hole in the Wall just up from the Minster on Petergate.  I like the Mason's Arms which is just a five minute walk from the Castle Museum.

We used to like to go to Caesar's which is an Italian on Goodramgate, but we don't live that close to it any more.  We are also big fans of Thida Thai on Rougier Street.  My friend from Greece really likes the Turkish place also on Rougier Street.  We've also eaten at Bari's which is in the Shambles and that was pretty good.  If you don't mind chains, go to Ask for the atmosphere because it's the old Assembly rooms (think Jane Austen books with dances).

For lunches, I like the Early Gray Tea rooms for a high tea, much more food and I like it better than Betty's also in the Shambles.  There's also a coffee shop called Cafe Concerto which is across from Hole in the Wall and is a bit expensive, but really has a fun atmosphere.

We don't eat out tons and usually we don't often go to eat in the pub any more.  :(  Plus, I think more and mor of the pubs in York are now owned by the big chains or at least many seem to have a similar looking menu and you can often go to other pubs in the UK that have the same menues.

I just checked - it's called Old Siam and is on Micklegate just inside the walls.

That one is really good, but it can sometimes be hard to get into.  Our experience has been that if you do not book a table ahead, you are out of luck.

We must have dropped lucky then, it was recommended to us by the owner of the B&B we were staying in and we just went there.

Thanks guys! Well, we ended up bar hopping yesterday... we went to Guy Fawkes Inn and walked the wall to The Black Swan. We then went to eat at an Indian place, I think it was on Swinegate somewhere. The night before that we ate at The Punch Bowl in the town. We discovered the pound sandwich place on The Shambles too! If you've never been there it's really neat because they will make any sandwich for you for a pound! Today we went to Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay- very neat, and then went up to Whitby... Whitby is stunning! We loved it. We ate at Quayside and all had fish-n-chips. We then drove down the park and stopped in Goathland which is so cute! It was a lovely time up here in York. I really love it here! I wish we lived closer! Thanks for all of the recommendations.
