Getting a UK driving license?
« on: April 19, 2011, 12:24:37 PM »
Hi all, just wanted to get some experiences about getting your driving license in the UK, what you have to go through, and how it was for you?

I've finally gotten the hang of driving over here, never thought I would feel comfortable going down those tiny two way roads that barely fit one car! But anyway I have an International driving license at the moment, which is going to expire in September. I'm trying to figure out how to get a UK license, and it looks like I'm going to have to take both the theory and road driving test? Needless to say the UK driving tests seem a heck of a lot harder than the US ones, and my husband who recently took his told me that they require a lot more technical manoeuvres from you which frightens me quite a bit! Specifically...bay parking. I just can't do it for the life of me, reversing has never been my strong suit and I'm terrified of having to do that during a test!

How did your driving test go, and any suggestions for someone who is used to driving in NYC?  ;D

There are a few threads on this.

Get an instructor because bay parking is the least of your issues.  Reversing around a corner, while satying close to the kerb was much moe difficult.

Take a look at the Travel and Transport area.  As bookgrl says, there are billions of threads on driving which should answer most of your questions.

Basically, you first need to get a provisional license, then take the theory test, then take the practical test.

Well I received my passport back from the DVLA here in NI accompanied by a letter saying that my provisional license would soon follow!  Now....to the task of finding a driving instructor.  Hopefully I won't have to take TONS of lessons because I have read the highway code and have driven all around the island.  Of course I know it will be driving how they want me to, but it helps to have some experience.

Has anyone bought the practice tests at places like WHSmith and are they worth the investment?

I had a book/CD I bought off the DVLA and found the CD of practice tests immensely helpful if only for the "hazard perception" bit and the ability to just drill through the tests until I was scoring high enough. If you learn well that way, I would suggest it.
