Peeking in to say hi
« on: June 10, 2011, 10:35:58 AM »
Hi everyone

Even though i've already posted a few times, just thought I'd formally introduce myself! I'm Amy, 21 and from Chicago. Hoping to be moving to Bristol, UK very soon! I've been with my boyfriend *Officially* for 2months. He lives in Bristol, we met online over 10yrs ago thru a mutual online friend. Kept in contact for years but lost contact for 5yrs and He found me xmas day on facebook last year. We've talked everyday for hours and in May I went to stay with him for 3wks, and was no doubt in my mind, I met the one for me! He feels the same way :) My family doesn't support me going to the UK whatsoever, so hoping to warm them up to the idea before I apply for any visas but lately they've been downright abusive about the whole situation. Especially since they can't meet my boyfriend as he cannot get a visa for the states due to a criminal record. So its caused its fair share of problems which is why I can't wait to get out of here and be there with him :)

But anyways, just thought I'd pop in and say hi!

Welcome to the forum :).

I'm from Bristol too - how do you like the city?

Especially since they can't meet my boyfriend as he cannot get a visa for the states due to a criminal record. So its caused its fair share of problems which is why I can't wait to get out of here and be there with him :)

Has he tried to get a visa for the US before and been refused, or is it that the nature of his record means he is automatically ineligible?

I ask because I have a conviction (DUI) from 2007 and since then I have secured 2 US visas with no problem - I lived in the US on a student visa for 8 months in 2008 and I also got a B2 visitor visa in 2009. I spent 2 weeks in the US last January and I'm flying back again on my visa in 2 weeks time for a vacation as well.

The nature of his convictions and arrests (Even if not convicted they are held against you) are why he automatically would be denied if he even applied. He was told to not even try.

Okay, I just wanted to check in case there was any way he might still qualify for a visa - as I spent a fair amount of time after my conviction researching whether or not I would be able to get a student visa (since I was due to apply for it just a few weeks later), so I got to know the reasons it could be approved or refused quite well!
