American style Dryer - recommendations?

Ah Yes, the useless combo (steamer-wrinkler) is exactly what I have.   

Does anyone actually *use* the "dryer" on theirs? I must put the word dryer in quotes, as it seems an oxymoron to state otherwise
In a way, it's almost anti-green if it's just wasting electricity rolling around accomplishing nothing 

I think it depends on the combo, our last one (Hotpoint) wasn't very efficient.  But the one we have now has 1600 spin speed and can leave things dry as a bone and red hot on the sensor auto dry.  It's an AEG by Electrolux Lavamat 7 kg capacity.  I use it about half the time in winter, preferring to hang the clothes outside when I can.

You can get american washers and dryers at Costco. I think they are labeled "industrial" or something like that but they are definitely just like the ones from home.

And if you have a US Costco card you can use it here (membership is a bit more restrictive than in the US)

Why does it have to be so fast? There are lots of excellent driers available in the U.K. and the reason they take longer is because they treat your valuable clothes more gently.

American driers (and washers) work so fast because they're hotter and rougher. They cause greater shrinkage and your clothes don't last as long as they should.

Do you really want to treat your precious clothes and other soft goods so roughly?

American dryers have different levels of heat and I never used high heat.

I think they work faster because, in general, the drums are bigger and so have more room for the air to circulate.
