This is the first year that April 15th have come and gone since my wife and I were married last summer -- my first marriage. I'm still in the US and she is in the UK. Normally, I file taxes even though I technically don't have to do so and never owe any taxes. I use the TurboTax e-filing set-up because taxes hurt my brain.
This year, I didn't file because when I put myself in the category of Married Filing Separately, my wife's Social Security number was required. Of course, she doesn't HAVE a Social Security number!
I didn't research it at the time since I really don't have to file taxes, and just let it go. But for future reference, what should I have done if I had wanted or needed to file this year? I had thought about getting a paper form and just writing in that she wasn't a US citizen, had no taxable income, and didn't live on US soil, but that was just the musings of a tax-strained brain...
Cheers,
~Teddy
