I'll be going back to the US in a few weeks time and while I am there I wanted to get my married name put on my drivers license and SSC. Is there anything special I need to know and what papers other then my marriage license should I take. I'm kind of hoping I can just walk in and wait to be seen. Is an appointment necessary? Anyone done this lately? How long does it take to get your SS card back?

what state?
fter the wedding

    * Get a new social security card
Once you get your marriage license (which usually takes a couple of weeks to arrive in the mail),download a form from the Social Security website http://www.ssa.gov/gethelp/gethelp1.htm. Then take that completed form, the license and your identification to your local social security office to get a new card.

    * Get a new drivers license
You'll also want to change your name on the other main form of identification – your drivers license. Most DMVs will change it with a copy of a marriage certificate, although others require you to wait until your social security card has been changed. Check with your local DMV for their rules.

In Texas...I brought proof I applied for new SS card to get my new license.
SS card came in about 10 days or so...As well as my license

Thank you ChillyWilly!

I'll be going to Arizona to get this all done. I'll have a look at there DMV website and see if they will change my name without the new SS card. I hope they can!

You said it took 10 days. Did they mail the card to you in the US or to England? I'll be in the US for 3 weeks so it should be plenty of time to get it in the mail.

I changed everything when I still lived there before I applied for my passport..so everything was mailed to me in Texas.

Good luck!
