moving to edinburgh in one week
« on: June 08, 2011, 12:06:06 AM »
To introduce myself, let me say that I am newly married to a wonderful and dear man, who himself was born and bred in Scotland.  His mother still lives in Edinburgh, and is a large part of the reason for our move.  She will be 85 later this month, and in need of assistance with day-to-day things.  Our other reason for moving is the local economy here.  There are far more and better opportunities for my husband and his career in Scotland.

I am interested in hearing from anyone who has made the move to the UK WITH TEENAGERS.  My two boys are unhappy at leaving their friends behind, to which I can relate, as my parents moved me when I was a senior in high school from the midwest to the west coast.  Is there any way to ease this transition for them?  I know, as teenagers, they're not going to be happy no matter what I do.  However, I would still like this to be as easy for them as possible.  Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Sorry Heather I dont have any advice but wanted to wish you good luck!
Edinburgh is lovely and it is one of my favorite places.
I am not sure how old your kids are but remember they get done with school faster here - it may be tough to join the ranks of a school here but hopefully they will find mates quickly and join right in.

god luck!

Hiya Heather
Sorry I don't have any advice either. Wanted to welcome you to Scotland tho. Im not far from Edinburgh over in Fife across the Forth Road Bridge. What part of Edinburgh are you going to be moving to? Feel free to ask away. I've been here in Scotland for almost 12 years now.. ( in July). Im from Massachusetts originally.  ;D
Again Welcome to the forum.
Kay

Many thanks for the words of welcome :)

I think the reason no one can give me any advice is that teens are involved, and there's just NO making them happy!  Honestly, they are good, smart kids, and will likely make friends quickly (especially once school begins).  They will hate it for a while, though, and will be angry with us for moving them.  We will just have to smile and hug them, and be patient with them.

We are moving to Dalkeith, about a five minute walk through the park to my mother-in-law.  Because my husband was born and raised in Scotland, the kids have been given a good idea as to what to expect at school.  They are particularly unhappy about wearing a uniform.  My husband is former British military (as is his mother), and we regularly attend local Scottish events, and watch a lot of British television, so hopefully the culture shock will be somewhat less traumatic for all of us.  I, for one, am looking forward to this move for a variety of reasons ;D  I am just not looking forward to the additional teen angst/attitude!  But I'm thinking it's just part of the deal, with not much to be done about it but wait it out....

Welcome to UKY!  :)

Oh not all schools have uniforms- there are several that just require 'proper dress' or the uniform, so maybe the one your kids end up going to doesn't.   :)

Good luck with your move!
