Just to add to the ever increasing pile of crap: after finding the perfect house to rent and applying for it, we just got Gazumped. Seriously, what is my life.

What a nightmare! I've had similar situations but only in America. All I can say is to do your homework before choosing another location. Walk around the neighborhood, talk to the neighbors, see if you can find crime statistics and talk to the local police.

All the properties I've ever stayed in (up to several months) in the U.K. were lovely and hassle-free. And I'm talking about low-middle price range, not posh areas.

Thanks for all the support everyone. The sale went through fine and we found a place to move to (the last one on our list) which turned out to be pretty great. Although it's on a busy main road, no one lives above us and the noise of cars driving by is much more soothing than the noise emitted from low life scum. Honestly, I've moved around all my life, never had such a nightmare before. You can live in a posh neighborhood, but it only takes one inconsiderate person to move in next to you to make your life hell. Now I actually look forward to coming home instead thinking of ways to not be home.

The traffic noise can get to me if I'm living on a main road but it usually quiets down as the evening progresses.
